Re: good stores in hidalgo

My two cents: (mostly for the uninitiated in Hidalgo. If you are a regular in Hidalgo, read it for fun only as I'm sure you have your own notes )

================================================== =========

Henry's

Henry's is ok, they have a good selection of gear and studio supplies, but yeah the prices are uh.. a bit higher (but still cheaper compared to mall prices). He is however my choice for bags. Excellent demo service too. Not to mention his lineup of bags and stock is more comprehensive amongst most of the other stores that sell bags. Avenue photo supply would be this shop's closest rival when it comes to bags. Then JT Photoworld.

Mayer Photo

People who are experts at dealing with people and know what they want should by at Mayers (read: diplomatic). I don't recommend buying at Mayers if you:

1) Are not sure of what gear you are looking for / want
2) if you are windowshopping
3) looking for a better deal (you won't find a better deal anywhere. Henry's might try to beat his price but in most counts, no)

Ramon's prices are the lowest. He never misses the mark on all my Hidalgo expeditions, he always wins the lowest price award. Personally, I don't care about his attitude, as long as his equipment and price is good. It seems he doesn't take too well to people who are still asking for discounts - then again, this applies to every vendor in Hidalgo (most especially the ladies at Avenue photo *wink*). If you are piqued by a sales person's attitude, then don't buy from him/her. 'nuff said. I will stop buying from him once his gear kicks on me.

In a nutshell, shopping at Mayer's is a culture clash. They seem to forget that Filipino culture puts a primer on presentation (which is poor in many aspects) which many notice (that there's no aircon, etc). For me, I don't care about these things, all I want is the gear that works A-ok, nothing more.

Avenue / 24k / JT Photoworld

For people who are ok with prices a notch up still, go to Avenue and whatnot. Avenue has a broader selection of stuff. What is priced at Mayers or Henry, add 100-200 bucks - that's the Avenue price. The best time to ask for a discount is if you are going to buy multiple quantities of the same item (like a radio receiver or similar).

Another good place for non-camera background supplies is 24K. They have a wider selection of supplies compared to Avenue and Henry's. However their prices are inconsistent. There are some items which are cheaper at Avenue, while some are cheaper here compared to Avenue and the rest of the competition. JT Photoworld is also a good choice of place to shop. I commend them for going the extra mile of trying to setup shop in Makati.

If you want SUPER excellent after-sales, buy at D-Zone. If you are not willing to spend a day just to go to Hidalgo for after-sales service claims (and come back after days again). You'd rather do it in the mall -- of course assuming you have the money.

Let's not forget that you didn't get into this hobby/profession because it's cheap.
With that being said, happy shopping!

Got a 55-200mm nikon lens from Mayers which they delivered to Bacolod. Paid i think P180 for freight. No problem naman. But i deal with Normer.

Re: good stores in hidalgo

I go to hidalgo a lot but i ended up buying from Mayers/Mang Ramon. He gives me the best price for my budget. Plus he sometimes delivers my purchase to my house....not bad.

I bought mine from avenue, but I think I saw some tamron lenses in Henry's, too.

make sure the stores are the one to burn holes in your pocket, not the thieves or pickpockets in and around the area!

krissy, unless your real surname is "thebike", you may want to use your real name before your account gets deleted here. PM the mods.
i think the camera "section" is just a stonethrow away from the dvd "section"
