RILES: around and along the tracks of the Philippine National Railway

At Joel Garcia's initiative, a group of DPP photographers ventured to experience a ride on one of these antiquated trains of the Philippine National Railway. Here are photos and stories from that Sunday morning we spent observing life as it revolves around these rusting tracks and the dusty commuter carriages that still crawl along it.

RUSTY MORNING

We began our little adventure at the ancient terminus of the railway - the Tutuban Station. The new edifice for the North Rail project has already been erected, although behind this, at the sprawling rail depot, lies the scattered bodies of old commuter trains and cargo carts. There is much to clean up here.

ehem, joel! what mentor?! i am amazed at your talent my friend! you were seeing stuff we didn't even notice! post those details shots, those graffitti along the bridge

there is so much to ponder here. i dont even know where to start.

The depression is almost cliche. The stacked shanties are worthy of wonder though. the railway...sunk in a sludge of black mud...holds these communities together, like a long, slender kebab. Its a vanishing scene, however, as the North Rail project gathers steam. The people living here are already being relocated to NHA villages in Laguna and Bulacan.
